Japan Project Proposal

My thoughts about this project was making a book. I love making things. My topic I really like is popular culture because I would love to explore sports that Japan does. It will be really interesting. I know they have some of the same sports we do but I want to see if there is anything different in them or their other sports we don't have. My book will talk about the different sports in Japan.

Who led and expedition to summit Everest in 1924 & what happened to him? When was the summit finally reached for the first (documented) time?
Mallory led the expedition to the summit & his partner Irvine in 1924. People don't know what happened to him. But then in 1975 a Japanese climber discovered a English man's body.

The summit was finally reached on May 29th, 1953. By Newzealander Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay Sherpa.

After locating these facts, reflect on why people would want to engage in these types of extreme activities. Why would someone do that? Why or why not? Is it worth to risk your life to do something like that?
The reasons people would want to climb the mountain was because it was either a dream of theirs to do or a family tradition. The family tradition was his dad climbed it & he wanted to follow his dads footsteps & be like him, his dad was his hero. Many people do it to get science information about mountains. Scientist always want to know how mountains are moving so they climb it to put gadgets & things to watch the mountains movement. Other people just love climbing mountain & mount Everest would be a major goal for them & something they really want. Some people just dream their whole life to climb the mountain. I would not risk my life to climb the mountain its not a goal in my life, & i surely don't want to die doing it either. I would love to climb it but if my life was a task i wouldn't do it.

More Than 100 Years Later, the World I Live In Still Displays the Impact of the New Imperialism

New Imperialism still effects us today. Trade still goes on between countries and the Suez Canal is still used. Better trade routes are being used and raw materials and natural resources are still imported and exported for the good of our country (a powerful country) to use and profit of other countries. We learned from all of the conquering that went on then and now we "westernize" other civilizations more civil like. We don't go to war to take over land. Instead we westernize other places by giving them aide and selling them the things we use so they think we are a good nation. And, when we do go to war, we don't go to take over a culture, we go to help out a culture and for them to keep their traditions. The muslim countries still hate us for our type of life because it is still strong in some of these countries like the Middle East and their hate for a western country is still strong. We still do our share of New Imperialism, which I think is just called "wesernizing" now, but we go about it alot differently. Selling and giving American-made things like Coke and McDonalds, are ways to get into other countries to try to change them into better ways of life.

Positive Effects of the New Imperialism

Positive effects: Industry was spread to other countries. Medical knowledge was spread, Christianity was spread, ways of growing food was spread. Finding and using natural resources was good for the conquerers, but bad for the land if it was depleted. People became rich (mostly conquerers) and the conquered became poorer and slaves. Europe grew stronger as they took over other lands. Trade expanded, gold and diamonds were discovered and many took advantage of this. Education was taken to new lands and some Africans rose up and fought for their independence. The Suez Canal was built to help with quicker trades. Egypt began to modernize by irrigation and developing industry. There are alot of positive effects but not sure if alot of them are worth it with all of the negative impacts to the cultures that were destroyed.

Negative Effects of the New Imperialism

Negative Effects: The drug opium was used as a way of making money for the British. In other areas like the Congo, the overseers there who were overseeing the copper, rubber, and Ivory mining treated the workers like slaves (beating them, mutilating them), which caused the population to drop. When the French conquered Algeria in North Africa, it costs thousands and thousnds of French lives and killed many more Algerians. Guerilla fighting broke out when the British tried to take over the Boers land. The British also came up with a complete segration system that stayed enforced until 1993. The Africans resisted imperialism and battled the French for many years. The Germans also fought against the resistance in Africa. The Ottoman Empire had economic problems and corruption. Internal revolts spread throughout and the Europeans thought they could take advantage of this. There was a genocide of the Armenians. The Europeans were spreading diseases to the new "worlds." The countries doing the conquering had trouble deciding the right way to do things and they were probably spreading themsleves too thin back hom - leaving a chance to have problems back home. They also lost alot of people during the conflicts, spent alot of money hurting their own economies as well. Another negative effect was the conquered lands losing part of their history and heritage while doing what the conquerers say.

What was the New Imperialism?

The New Imperialism was when a powerful country takes over/controls another country or region of its political, economic, and cultural way of living. It was considered "new" because in Europe, powerful, centered governed nation-states had sprung up and the Industrial Revolution helped the European economy greatly. Many things caused the new imperialism. People were using new imperialism so they could win many places they needed overseas to expand so they could trade with other countries & get more money for their country to grow & improve on. They would rather export items out then pay to import them in. Reasons for this was so they could get more natural resources from other places across the world (that they would conquer by battle) because they could not grow their own resources or make them. By the 1870s-1914s many places gained control over much of the world. For example Europe found favor with all classes giving them much of the new imperialism for their military power & economic grow. These places had grown stronger. The new imperialism was to make places stronger but on the other hand make other places to become weaker. This was a good & bad thing. The places that got stronger for example were the western areas, they gained technology and improved medical knowledge that helped them survive deadly tropical diseases, & win wars & land. So the new imperialism was for countries to gain their own strength & win many countries.
